Greenbank Barns: A Holiday at Home

Last week I had the chance to visit a renovation project of five-star luxury accommodation called Greenbank Barns.  Having bit of a life-long interiors crush, it was not a hardship to spend a couple of hours nosey-ing round!  Positioned between Barnard Castle and Richmond, Yorkshire, these barns are available to hire, so, in order for you get the most out of this post, let’s suppose you’re looking for a place whilst I take you on a virtual tour.

Greenbank Barns 2

The two available barns can be rented separately for either 8 or 10 people, and collectively will accommodate 18 people. Dexter houses 10, Shorthorn, 8. (The names? they’re the breed of cattle which used to occupy the barns!).

Left through Dexter’s door is the kitchen, where your gaze is immediately diverted to the adjoining HUGE (as in 100msq huge) hangout dining/living room.  This room is seriously impressive.  High ceilings with exposed beams, brick walls and stone floors mean this room ‘feels right’ yet despite its size, is still cosy  (can’t tell you how many times I said ‘Wow’).

The table comfortably seats 18 people; in my head I had a Christmas Dinner/New Year Party scenario playing out.  This place would be ‘perfect’ for extended family occasions (which is probably why it’s mostly booked on weekends throughout 2016 into 2017!)

At the far end of the room are patio doors to an amazing view across the fields outside.  An outdoor table and chairs, BBQ and a hot tub at both properties mean the spectacularly peaceful view can be enjoyed to the max.

The Dexter farmhouse kitchen; spacious, bright and cosy.

Connecting the kitchen and living space is a snug with its own TV and wood-burner.  Decorated with more of a masculine, industrial edge, this space would be ideal for those who want to perhaps retire from the main party to have a bit of peace without being too detached.

The ‘feel’ of the place I referred to earlier is not just owing to the architectural masterpiece of these conversions but also the outstanding interior design.  Local business Niche Living, for me, have done an excellent job in giving each space its own characteristics which collectively fit well along-side each other.

The majority of the bedrooms have their own ensuites.  The chateau-style master bedroom is simply delightful and features a luxurious free-standing bath.

The rear of the properties have paved and grassy areas which can be accessed from the two bedrooms which over-look this space – a gate in the wall providing access from one to the other if required.

Shorthorn’s kitchen is larger than Dexters and, owing to the views across the Holmedale Valley has a definitive ‘wow factor’ as soon as you walk in.  The beautiful dining area for eight, overhanging chandelier and sofa nearby create a relaxing vibe.  I couldn’t help feeling that if you booked as a party of 18 and you ‘got’ this house, then you wouldn’t feel worse off because you didn’t get the larger dining/living room on offer in Dexter, especially when you see what’s next…

A cozy lounge has more patio doors to the stunning view out front and also adjoins another amazing space – the games room.  The glass roof in here is simply delightful.  We got to see it on an extremely sunny-but-cloudy day and the natural light was quite something.

These three collective open spaces are seamlessly transitional, beautifully open and light and have a that wonderful outdoors-in quality.

The bedrooms, as with Dexter, are a mix of upstairs and downstairs rooms, some ensuite and others sharing house bathrooms.

The Greenbank Barns had me at ‘hello’; I thoroughly enjoyed my brief visit and only imagine that a stay there would tick all the boxes for those looking for a relaxing country break.  Both barns are dog friendly, and as part of the five-star service, private chefs and beauty therapists can also be arranged for guests.

Dexter and Shorthorn are let by Holiday at Home – you can visit their website here.  Meanwhile, I’ll stop taking goofy bathroom selfies in clever mirrors…

  1. Oh wow I am so glad you included all the photos because I could seriously look at these all day. Every single detail in each room is stunning. I love that dining space with the fabulous view out over the fields. The yellow and navy looks so nice together too. So much love!
